Main board: Scheidlieder - Songs of Farewell
Farewell pain - on the way to prison, to the galleys, to an unknown country, on the run, when dying, many farewell songs and letters were written in this way.
In the novel "Die Furgge" by Katharina Zimmermann, for example, "Ein Hertzensweh mir überkam" is heard on the emigrants' ship.
The emigrants on the ship in "Passion in Bern" by Walter Laedrach sing "Weil nun die Zeit vorhanden ist": a woman dies and is buried on the shore. Her fellow passengers have to stay on the ship; from there they sing a farewell song for the deceased.
